Riverton Organic Farmers' Market on the Main Street

Every Saturday from 10 am til 12.30 pm a Farmers Market is held outside the Environment Centre (beside the Hardware Shop on the main street). Stroll along and get some organic, seasonal fruit and veges, honey, bread and many other fresh foods. Don't hesitate to go inside, relax on the sofa's, browse the extensive library, have a coffee and a chat. You'll be amazed with what's on offer!

Sunday Afternoon Illustrated Talks at Te Hikoi - Last Sunday of each month at 4 p.m.

During the quiet and cold winter months Te Hikoi has monthly Illustrated Talks on offer. So far, in 2010 we've had several interesting speakers entertaining us, such as local artist Nigel Brown from Cosy Nook, Round Hill and Orepuki gold mining expert Lloyd Blakie, and the president of the Southland Geological and Lapidary Society, Marion Troon. There is a $10 entry fee, which includes supper, a cuppa and a chat afterwards. Hope to see you there!

 "The Rise, Fall and Rise of the CRA8 (Southland and Fiordland) Commercial Rock Lobster Fishery"

Profiles the fishery as it is now as well as looking at the early development of the fishery, its decline in the 1980's and early 90's and the use of modern fisheries management methods to rebuild it so that it is now the largest and most economically valuable of all inshore fishstocks across all species in New Zealand. Fisheries management is often compared to farming.He will explain the similarities and also the challenges faced by those managing fisheries. As well as a bit on the live export market.

September speaker will be Nick Mortimer from GNS (Geological nuclear scientists) speaking on his recent explorations on Solandar Island, and what scietific information they have since gathered. This will ge HUGE. The date to be finalised, as to fit in with Nick's other committments in the area, this talk will not be the last Sunday of the month.
