Te Hīkoi museum was opened in December 2007, with collection items from Riverton Heritage Society, which was previously Wallace Early Settlers Association (whose collection began in 1925). The society is now part of Riverton Heritage Museum and Tourist Centre Trust, who own the premises and operate the museum.

Donations
As we have very limited space, our preference is for offers of objects to be emailed to us for consideration before dropping it off.
Like many museums, only a small amount of our collection goes on display, and most only for temporary exhibitions. We do endeavour to share our collection with the world by having images and information shared online.

A new way to support us - with the Southland Foundation - giving to us has been made a lot more sustainable. The Te Hīkoi Museum Riverton Aparima Fund is designed to grow over time, creating a stable and enduring source of support for the maintenance and advancement of the Museum. Often times, people think to donate objects to the museum, with little awareness of the resource it takes to preserve, store and display these gifts. It is hoped that, by growing this fund, in time it will help support the operational costs of the museum, and truly safeguard the heritage of the South. You can give to this fund during your lifetime or as part of a bequest in your will. It is a wonderful way to support the future generations in Southland. Your donation is pooled and invested, and a share of the generated income can be available to support Te Hīkoi Museum. As this fund grows over time it will enable a continuous income stream to support the future of Te Hīkoi Museum and in turn preserve it for all those in our community who benefit from visiting our facility.
